CAMPAIGN ORGANIZED BY SECURING THE CREATIVE GOLDMINE IN YOUTHS
INITIATIVE AT MARYLUCK COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE DOMICILED IN ADUWAWA OFF BENIN-AUCHI EXPRESS ROAD, BENIN CITY, EDO
STATE ON THE 9TH OF NOVEMBER 2018
In furtherance of her Substance and
Drug Prevention Advocacy Campaign Project, Securing
the Creative Goldmine in Youths Initiative organized a one day Drug and Substance Abuse prevention campaign
programme with the theme Drug and
Substance Abuse prevention, a panacea for reducing Social Vices among Youths, wherein the
UNODC’s standard manual of drug
Education for school children: Increasing Knowledge and keeping safe was adopted, the programme took place at Maryluck comprehensive College
domiciled in Agbi street off Benin Auchi
express road, Aduwawa, Benin city, Edo
State on the 9th of July 2018, The Principal of the School mr
Erhabor Erhiagbonye who was exited on arrival of the team at past 10:am after
which the team took their position.
The programme was well attended by staffs and
students of the school, while Mrs. Grace
Obakina of Smiles Africa International
Youths Development Initiative diligently anchored the programme, After the
introduction of both the team and participant, the Executive Director Securing the Creative
Goldmine in Youths Initiative, Mr Edwin
Asibor mounted the podium to give his opening remark which centered on the need
for students who form the bulk of youths population to be educated on the
concept of drugs and its cost benefit on the society with a view to keeping safe as well as the
need for stakeholders to be holistically involved in the prevention and
reduction of Substance and Drug abuse. The
insightful lectures were presented by Miss Ruth Idemudia, Mr philip Imumorhen, Mr Idemudia
Jude, Mrs Grace Obakina and Mr Edwin Asibor
with the topics: Drug education, keeping Healthy, Concept of Drug
(Licit, Illicit, Stimulants, Depressants, and Hallucinogens ) Alcohol, Tobacco,
Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroin, Cough mixture (codeine) and Tramadol and their short
and long time effects each on the users, family
and the society at large. The highly participatory programme gave the
curious students opportunity to ask various questions with the appropriate answers, at the end of
the presentation a written test
questions was given to the students to evaluate their understanding and
knowledge of the subject.
Stakeholder’s Dialogue : The
high point of the Programme was a Stakeholders dialogue between the school
staffs and the team, where in Mr Edwin
Asibor who presided over the dialogue laid emphasis on the pivotal role played
by teachers on the development of students as well as communication with the parents during Parents Teacher Association
(PTA) meetings, hence a collaborative effort in the prevention of drug menace. Mr Erhabor the principal highly
appreciated the organization for the laudable program and seek for a continuity
of the exercise, while Mr yahayah one of the teaching staff harped on the very
importance of the programme to the students, according to him, the project came at the right time due to the prevalent nature
of the school environment as well that of the students hence knowledge gained
therein will deter the students from engaging in the act while they too will
share the information to residents
especially drug users in
their environment and further pleaded
for a continuation of the exercise which he is convinced will have a lasting
impact on the students with a view to preventing the onset of new influence
Conclusion: The programme came to an end with the presentation of
some IEC materials to the Principal by
Mr Edwin Asibor the Executive Director, the materials which are to be used by
teachers in continuation of sensitization of the students during and after
class.
Project Team: The team comprises of Mr Edwin Asibor, the Executive
Director, Mr Philip Imumorhen the progrmame manager and Miss Ruth Idemudia the
Admin/Secretary from securing the Creative Goldmine in Youths Initiative
and Mrs Grace Obakina from Smiles Africa
international youth development initiative and Mr Jude idemudia the Executive
Director of living spring empowerment Organization, Some Members of the press were equally present to
grace the programme with their reportage
